Efficacy of Methenamine Hippurate vs. Low-Dose Antibiotics Prophylaxis in Women with Recurrent UTIs
The ALTAR trial compared methenamine hippurate with standard daily low-dose antibiotics for preventing recurrent UTIs in women, demonstrating high efficacy for methenamine hippurate in reducing UTI recurrence. Given rising antimicrobial resistance, especially in E. coli linked to antibiotics, methenamine hippurate may be a preferred option for UTI prevention in women with recurrent episodes.
